Mission

The Phoenix Residence, Inc. develops person-centered, quality living experiences for individuals with disabilities.

History

The Phoenix Residence, Inc. (PRI) was incorporated on August 2, 1974, and opened in October 1977 as a private non-profit for adults with developmental and physical disabilities. Phoenix was created as a community alternative to Regional Treatment Centers. Leading the way was a group of parents seeking a better life for their grown children. The original flagship facility served 51 individuals who required an accessible, barrier-free living environment. Individuals' cognitive abilities varied. Most, if not all the individuals who lived at PRI, were physically disabled and required personal support to assist with activities of daily living. Many of the individuals were considered medically fragile.

We offered residential and day program services until 1990. It was then that the two broke apart and our sister company, Phoenix Service Corporation, was born. Phoenix Service Corporation is certified as a Rehabilitation Agency, and much of our leadership team works for both agencies.

We expanded our services to Home and Community-Based Services in the late 1980s. In 2003, we sought approval from the Department of Human Services (DHS) to relocate the individuals from the 51-bed facility to small 6-bedroom homes in communities near family and friends. The relocation project was successful with the final home opening in 2005.

We sold our original facility in 2008 and now our corporate office is located at 222 Plato Blvd. E in Saint Paul.
