Helping people with disabilities soar beyond possibilities

The Phoenix Residence, Inc. was incorporated on August 2, 1974 and opened in October 1977 as private non-profit facility for adults with developmental and physical disabilities.

It was created to provide an alternative to Regional Treatment Centers or geriatric nursing homes. The moving force behind the organization’s development was a group of parents seeking an appropriate living arrangement for their grown sons and daughters.

The Phoenix Residence, Inc. mission is to develop quality living experiences for persons with disabilities. The original facility served forty-eight residents both male and female who required an accessible home and varying levels of programmatic and health care services; the facility also provided respite care for one to five additional persons. Phoenix pursued approval and funding to relocate its services from the 48 bed facility to small community based homes. Department of Human Services approved the relocation request in 2003. Phoenix developed eight new 6-bed room homes in 2005. All individuals living at the facility located at 135 Colorado St. East in St. Paul moved into homes in various communities. In 2007 the building was leased to Meridian Behavioral Health at which time the corporate office of Phoenix was relocated to 330 Marie Ave East in West St. Paul. The larger facility was sold to Meridian in 2008.
