Phoenix Staff Shines as ARRM Cares Finalist

One of our staff made it to the final round of the ARRM Cares Award! Read on to learn more.

We are thrilled to announce that one of our dedicated employees, Zockinna Bell, has been named a finalist for the prestigious ARRM Cares Award. This honor, awarded by our  local trade association ARRM, recognizes outstanding staff who excel in the disability field in our state. We loved celebrating Zockinna at the ARRM Conference this spring where all the finalists were recognized.

Zockinna, a 38-year-old professional from Chicago, brings over seven years of experience to our team. As a proud parent to a 15-year-old daughter, Zockinna draws daily inspiration from her family, channeling that motivation into her work.

From the moment she learned about Phoenix, Zockinna knew she wanted to be part of our organization. She was inspired by our powerful mission and the inspiring story of President & CEO Darlene Scott. Her journey with Phoenix began over two years ago, when she started as Program Supervisor at Douglas House. Over the years, she has worked at several homes, but now manages our Viking House.

Zockinna’s passion for helping people has always been at the heart of what she does. She loves being part of a team that is dedicated to making a real difference in the lives of  others. For Zockinna, working at Phoenix is more than just a job—it’s a purpose.

“The best part of working at Phoenix is seeing the smiles on the faces of the people we serve. That moment—when someone feels seen, supported, and uplifted—means everything to me,” said Zockinna. “Their happiness becomes my happiness. It’s in those smiles that I know I’ve made a difference, and that I’ve done something truly meaningful.”

One of her favorite memories at Phoenix was celebrating a client’s birthday. She dreamed of having a Princess and the Frog–themed party—complete with decorations and a princess dress. Zockina made it her mission to bring that vision to life.

“Seeing her light up with joy, dressed like a princess and surrounded by the theme she loved, was unforgettable,” Zockinna recalled. “She smiled, cried, and thanked me, and in that moment, I knew I had done something truly special.”

Zockinna's advice to those starting out in the field is simple yet profound: put your heart into it. She believes that this work is about more than just showing up—it’s about showing you care. By making the individuals feel seen, heard, and valued, and by leading with compassion, Zockinna has made a real difference in their lives.

She's been an excellent manager, always showing dedication and commitment to her team. Working with her has been an amazing experience as she  consistently fosters a supportive and positive work environment. Her leadership skills have truly made a difference and it's wonderful to see her recognized as an ARRM Cares finalist.”

Looking ahead, Zockinna envisions herself growing within Phoenix by taking on a leadership role where she can help shape the future of the organization. She hopes to recruit passionate individuals who share our mission and values, and to play a part in expanding and strengthening Phoenix's impact on the community.

Winners will be announced this fall during Direct Support Professional Week in September. You can read Zockinna’s entire nomination here.
