Celebrating Made in the Shade 2021 Virtually

Despite it going virtual, we still had a successful fundraiser!

We had hope! We thought we might be able to return to the lake for this year’s Made in the Shade event, but the ongoing pandemic shattered our dreams! Nearly a month before the 5K walk was set to  happen, the committee made the difficult decision to cancel the in-person event once again this year, and instead, hold it virtually. However, that did not stop us in celebrating and fundraising for what would have been the 30th anniversary of the annual Made in the Shade 5K Walk, Run & Roll.

Phoenix has been a part of Made in the Shade for almost a decade and so many good memories have been made walking around the lake. We’ve met lifelong friends, listened to some great music, and raised money all for a good cause! Traditionally, this 5K walk, run and roll brings together people from six disability organizations across the Twin Cities to help provide opportunities and bring awareness to those with disabilities. This year, we had to go virtual once again!

However, we still celebrated here at Phoenix! Many of our homes went for a walk, played games, or simply got outdoors in honor of the event. As part of our virtual week, all staff and individuals we support received the infamous Made in the Shade T-shirts—this year in light purple!

Despite having to move to a virtual campaign, we still had a successful fundraiser, bringing in $11,125—the most we’ve raised since 2017!

We’d like to recognize all our sponsors and everyone who supported our 2021 Made in the Shade event—either through a sponsorship or donation or if you joined us in spirit by walking in your neighborhood! Your support means the world to us! We hope to see at you back at the lake next year!

Thank you for supporting The Phoenix Residence!

Made in the Shade Shout Out

We’d like to recognize one special staff member for going above and beyond in her fundraising efforts for Made in the Shade. For the second year in a row, Direct Support Professional Laurie Case has taken it upon herself to raise money for Chaparral House for this event. This year, she raised $370 from her fundraiser — $200 more than last year! Way to go, Laurie!!

For this fundraiser, Laurie hit the water and kayaked for the day, raising as much money as she can for the guys at Chaparral House. This year, they plan to use the money for a new raised Garden Bed. Theirs broke and they love to garden, so it’s the perfect opportunity to grow their own vegetables!

Thank you for doing this for Chapparal House, Laurie!!
