The Phoenix Residence, Inc.

The Russ Douglas-Phoenix Golf Classic 2011

February 2011

Dear Friends and Family,

My name is Libby Johnson. I would like to introduce you to my son, Alex. Alex is a consumer of Phoenix, Inc. He resides at Carver house in Maplewood. He is currently the youngest housemate living there. Alex is a young man with big, brown eyes, long arms and legs, and a big, broad smile. He is a very expressive person – when he is happy. He lets you know and when he is mad; he shares it with everyone. He is a very complex character whose needs are not really all that complicated. He is social and interactive, but this is, of course, only when he wants to be. He recognizes familiar people and shows affection. Alex loves music, especially classical and jazz piano. He loves when someone plays the piano for him. He also loves to watch movies and a wide variety of television shows. He enjoys riding in vehicles – it does not matter where he goes. He loves to nap, and does it with passion!

One thing we are sure of is that Alex is someone who needs a lot of people to be involved in his care giving. About two years ago, Alex made a change in residence when he moved to Carver House. The reason for the change was Alex’s age, and our desire that he be closer to our home in St. Paul. The transition was very smooth – much smoother than we anticipated.

This is not exactly the life we envisioned when we welcomed him into the world 23 years ago. Like most parents, we were filled with hope and anticipations about raising a child who would one day join the world with the ability to shape a satisfying future for himself. When we realized that he would have a different path then other children, we were unsure how his adult life would eventually unfold. The services provided by Phoenix allow him to have all the components of a life that is not much unlike that of his peers. He is the happiest we have ever seen him in his short life. His health has improved; he is more content; and in general, his behavior is much more consistent. His life at Carver House offers the very predictable structure and routine that Alex so needs to thrive. It is so important that services like the ones offered to Alex at Carver House continue to be an option for individuals with disabilities and their families.

Please join me in supporting The Phoenix Residence, Inc. in its efforts to support our loved ones! The primary fund-raising event hosted by Phoenix over the past eleven years is the Russ Douglas-Phoenix Golf Classic. This year the event will be held on Monday, June 13, 2011, at River Oaks Golf Club in Cottage Grove.

I hope that you will join us in supporting this event in any way that you can. It is a fun day of meeting new and old acquaintances, working together for a common cause. We truly look forward to it, and I certainly hope to see you there.

As friends of The Phoenix Residence, Inc., there are many ways we can help:

  1. Charitable Contributions — We are asking for minimum contribution of $100 or more per family for this event.

  2. Raffle and Silent Auction — We are looking for donations from individuals or organizations. Remember, no item is too small! If you have connections with local businesses, give them a call and ask if they would be willing to donate an item or make a contribution.

  3. Volunteers — Last, but certainly not least, we need volunteers before, during, and after the event to assist with various tasks.
  4. ,
  5. Golfing — If you like to golf, registering to participate in this event is another way that you can support Phoenix.

  6. Event Sponsors — We offer various levels of sponsorship ranging from $100 to $5,000 Hole Sponsorship. If you or your company would like to sponsor this event, this is yet another great way to show your support. Please see the Sponsorship Levels for more information.

Your support in any of these areas would be greatly appreciated. The golf registration materials will be available later on the Web site. Please complete the General Contributions, Hole Sponsorship, Silent Auction or Raffle Items, Event Sponsorship, or Volunteering and the Hole Sponsorship forms and return them to us. We appreciate your help!

Sincerely,
Libby Johnson
